The Location

Learn about Frangokastello.

You find us here in Frangokastello, in a dream-like, unaltered corner of the Mediterranean. Our area is rich in history and offers fantastic, rugged mountains, wild gorges, soft beaches and the most beautiful views of the Libyan Sea.

Frangokastello is a scattered settlement located at the Southern edge of a sparsely vegetated plain, in front of the magnificent backdrop of the White Mountains to the West and with the Libyan Sea and Gavdos Island to the South.

The centre of the village is the impressive Venetian castle from the 14th century with a peninsular and a wide sandy beach in the front. Nowadays, the area's relative remoteness and extensive, sheltered and gently shelving sandy beaches have created a holiday destination with rural accents and small touristic businesses. Supermarkets and things holidaymakers need you can meet with on the long main road of Frangokastello.

In Frangokastello you'll find the clean traditional Cretan herbs, the tasty thyme honey, wine, raki, olive oil from organic farming and many other products we make in honour of tradition as we did for hundreds of years. Here still live old shepherds who know the hidden places where to gather the precious invigorating Cretan mountain tea called 'Malotira'.
